Plants and planting are key to the C21st sustainable city, addressing most of the important governmental urban policy drivers.  There is now increasingly compelling evidence that they improve our physical and psychological health, the livability of the physical environment in a climate change epoch, and they are key to the support of animal biodiversity.  But these benefits come at a price, and paradoxically, as some societies become richer they become less inclined to want to pay taxes to support the maintenance of this vegetation in public landscapes.  What can we do in cites, both now and in the future, to enable us to maximize the benefits and minimize the costs?
